Cotton fabric and cotton-blends are fantastically versatile, which makes them a great all-purpose material for your clothes, curtains, and a wide range of other fabrics around your household. It balances a soft feel with a robust strength and durability that makes it one of the most popular fabrics in use today.
Cotton and cotton-blend fabrics can last a long time too, provided you take care of them correctly. Unfortunately, they can be woven in a number of ways, from ultra-durable to incredibly delicate so there isn’t a single approach to taking care of your cotton fabrics. You need to know the proper cleaning method for each item so you don’t ruin it.
If you aren’t sure, you can always trust your local dry cleaner to do it right.
Cotton fabric cleaning tips
Washing: Knowing how to wash and take care of cotton fabric helps prevent shrinking or other damage. First, read the label to make sure it can be washed. If it can, what temperature should the water be and what wash cycle do you use? You may be able to use cold water and a gentle cycle, but that may not get some of your clothes truly clean. If it says “Dry Clean Only,” make sure you take it to a professional.
Drying: Hot temperatures can cause shrinking or other damage. Be sure to read the label for proper drying instructions. You may not be able to put it in the dryer. If you can, find out what temperature you should use.
Regular care: When it comes to cotton and cotton-blends, it’s a good idea to stick to a cleaning schedule. Of course, you wash your clothes regularly but are there some that don’t need washed every time you wear them?
Don’t forget to clean bedding regularly, too. For curtains and other household items, you may not need to clean them as often but don’t wait too long. Regular cleaning can help them last longer and make them easier to clean.
