Cleaning out your closet can be a rewarding task Posted on February 2, 2023 under Blog, Cleaning Tips. | no comments.
Cleaning out your closet may not be your favorite thing to do but it can help you get organized, and you may find items to donate to charity or sell.
This is the perfect time of year to tackle cleaning out your closet. Many people like to get a fresh start on a new year by getting organized. Your closet is a great place to start.
If you find it an overwhelming task, break it down into phases. First sort your items, then organize what’s left, and purge what you don’t want. Take a break when needed but make sure you return to complete the project! Then reward yourself when you’re done!
Sort
When you first start your closet cleaning mission, you’ll want to separate all your items by the pieces you know you want to keep and other items that require action.
Some items may even still have the tags on them. If this is the case, you’ll need to start by firmly deciding which items you’re keeping. These are items you love and wear frequently or are your go-to special occasion pieces.
Try on items you aren’t sure you can wear and check clothes for damages or stains.
Sort your clothes based on the different actions required. You may have piles for clothes that need to be cleaned, repaired, altered, donated, sold online, or thrown away.
Once they are arranged in piles, it’s time to start tackling one pile at a time.
Organize
Organize what you want to keep. Group your clothes by type or by season, whatever makes the most sense to you. This is your opportunity to make your closet more functional.
You will also want to organize the clothes that need repaired, cleaned, or altered. Your local dry cleaner may be able to take care of all those for you. Otherwise, you may need to take the clothes a few different places. You can do them all at once or if you have many items, you may want to do a few at a time.
Purge
Once you organize everything and put it in piles, it’s important that you follow through to get rid of your piles. Throw away clothes you don’t want or need. Drop off any clothes you want to donate.
If you plan to sell clothes online, take photos and put them online. There are plenty of sites where you can sell gently used clothes. You can read a previous blog post with tips about selling clothes online.
Regardless of what you are going to do with the clothes you don’t want, follow through and don’t let them end up back in your closet!
