Laundry tips to save time and money Posted on September 20, 2020 under Blog, Cleaning Tips, Uncategorized. | no comments.

The average household spends more than 2.5 hours and about $11 a week on laundry but following a few simple laundry tips can save time and money.

The average American family does about 8 to 10 loads of laundry each week and each load takes about an hour and a half, according to The Spruce.com. Since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports families average more than 2.5 hours a week on laundry, that amount obviously does not include the actual time the washer and dryer takes.

Many Southwest Florida families would say they spend much more than a couple hours a week on laundry but they’d like to spend much less.

In addition to time spent doing laundry, families spend an average of $43.60 per month cleaning their clothes at home. Families using a laundromat spend more than double that amount, about $167 a month.

The cost for doing laundry at home includes water, electricity, detergent and dryer sheets. It does not account for the cost of the washer and dryer. That would add about another $2.50 a week.

If you are watching your budget and trying to make more time for things you enjoy, here are some tips.

Laundry tips save time & money

This first one may surprise you a little. Use your dry cleaner for laundry services. Wash, dry and fold services such as those from Champion Cleaners may be more economical than you think. You have to weigh the cost of service versus how much time and money you spend on laundry. Don’t forget your time is valuable. For some, that may be the only excuse they need to stop doing laundry.

If you use a laundromat, you should compare what you spend each month to what laundry service would cost. Some Southwest Florida condominium complexes don’t have washers and dryers in the units so residents must use the community’s laundry room or a laundromat. Having someone take that chore off your hands may be worth it.

In addition to providing dry cleaning and wash and fold services, Champion Cleaners offers free pickup and delivery services. You don’t even have to spend time driving to the dry cleaner.

If you prefer to do laundry at home, you can save time and money by:

  • Trying to reduce the number of loads you do a week. Wait to do laundry when you have a full load. Although many machines are more energy and water efficient than they’ve been in the past, this can help reduce water and electric bills.
  • Separating your clothes into light, dark and delicate piles. You may even want to use separate laundry baskets or bins for dirty clothes throughout the week. Delicate materials such as lace, silk and satin should be separated so they aren’t tossed around with heavier, more sturdy clothing.
  • Reading the label and follow proper cleaning instructions. Replacing clothes that get ruined in the laundry can be costly.
  • Treating stains promptly. If you are afraid you may not be able to get out the stain, take it to the dry cleaner right away. They will have a better chance of removing the stain.
