Most of us have a considerable amount of money tied up in our garments and as your dry cleaner it is my responsibility to protect that investment. With that in mind, I have put together a list of seven tips that can help you get the most out of your dry cleaning dollars.
- We all have moments when all of a sudden it would appear that we have grown an extra arm and due to our lack of coordination with this new appendage we end up wearing what we are either eating or drinking. When this occurs it is important to bring your garment to your dry cleaner as soon as possible, stains left to long can be impossible to remove. Do not try to remove the stain with water, club soda, etc. This will likely set the stain and damage a “dry clean only” garment.
- Once you bring your garment to your dry cleaner, let them know what created the stain. Don’t be nervous, I guarantee we have heard it all!
- When adorning ourselves with our favorite perfumes, lotions, deodorants, antiperspirants, and other toiletries remember to let them dry before you get dressed. Some of these products can adversely affect the dyes in your garments or chemically react and stain the garment permanently.
- If you are planning on an extremely stressful day, perhaps interviewing for a new job, I would suggest you not where your favorite silk shirt. Excessive perspiration can cause many dyes to discolor.
- Now this is a big one, have matching pieces cleaned together. I know you got something on your jacket but not on your slacks or skirt and you’re trying to save a few bucks, but I have to tell you there can be a little color loss in the garment, though minimal, it can be noticeable.
- It is important to protect your garments from direct sunlight but also from strong artificial light (fluorescent), who would have thought….
- One final thing, don’t iron stained or soiled clothing. The heat can set some stains and then… well you know what that means.
