Cleaning and Caring For Household Items

Interior Design

Most people spend a lot of time and money decorating their homes, looking for that special item that is going to showcase their personality, family treasures, and loved ones. Our homes say a lot about who we are and what is important to us. So I want to give you a little information on how to protect them.

Draperies

The thing you have to remember about draperies is that they are highly sensitive to the effects of age, moisture, light, heat, tobacco smoke, and other atmospheric soils.  These environmental conditions can weaken and discolor the fabric.

Bedspreads and comforters

When purchasing those all important bedspreads and comforters check for care instructions, as they may appear on a temporary label or on the packaging instead of being attached to the item themselves. Leave the care label attached or if you need to remove it, save the care instructions and bring them with you to the dry cleaner. This will help you and the dry cleaner determine the best care for this item.

Upholstery and Slipcovers

Most furniture cannot be put in a washing machine so they are usually cleaned in place. The American Furniture Manufactures have adopted a code to help you determine the most effective cleaning methods

Code W:  Spot cleaning, using foam only from water-based cleaning agent, such as a mild detergent

Code  X:  Clean only by vacuum or light brush

Code  S:  Clean by a professional cleaning service only is recommended

Code W-S: Spot clean using a either a mild solvent or a water- based cleaning agent

Heirloom

Antique quilts and linens require great care in cleaning. Let your drycleaner know that the item is old and will require special treatment.

Prolonged Life

How long these items last will depend on the care you give them. Remember that closely woven fabrics are more durable then loosely woven fabrics, consider the amount of direct sunlight the item will receive, read all care instructions before purchasing, and remember that regular cleaning is important in prolonging the life of textiles

I hope this information helps with not only the cleaning of your household item but also makes you a more informed consumer and remember when in doubt ask your dry cleaner.
